Sam Ferriday Barnes

Painting and drawing have always been at the heart of Sam’s art career which has in essence gone full

circle. She graduated in Fine Art in London and eventually ran a gallery in East Sussex exhibiting 19th and

early 20th century paintings in the Gallery and at the Fine Art Fairs. She converted a small building

opposite her house into an exhibition space and continued to exhibit there for some years but eventually

returned to paint full time. Initially just on commission completing many pet portraits, some of horses

and ocassionally children but more latterly beginning to paint observations and incidents in every day

life. She is a huge admirer of the Newlyn School and the Glasgow Boys, but much of her inspiration and

encouragement has been from her artist friend and mentor Anna Pugh whom she has lived opposite for

almost 30 years in the tiny village of Slaugham.
